Did I understand the article correctly?  They've added a 1.4x extender into the lens?  Making it a permanent part of the lens?

If so, how does that impact the real readings of the aperture settings considering the increased amount of glass cuts down on the amount of light getting through?

That's what that "hump" appears to be in the press image above. 

I suspect that it will work just like the standard 1.4x teleconverter (in terms of light) and reduce the aperture to effectively f/5.6 when the teleconverter is "activated" or whatever they do with it.  So, you'll effectively get a 280-560mm f/5.6 lens.

It's weird.  But I kind-of like it.  I'd rather have one of their new f/4 500mm or 600m lenses, but starting at $10,000?  Too rich for my blood!
